How much does a car costWas kostet eigentlich ein Auto?

Autokauf
Lease or buy?

If you buy a car, you pay the whole price at once. If you lease a car, you pay about 30%-50% of the price as a down payment and the rest in monthly lease rates. The leasing agreement is somewhat similar to taking out a loan for your car and repaying it in monthly instalments. This could be expensive because each monthly lease rate includes interest in addition to the principal amount.

New or second-hand?

New cars lose value rapidly. If a car is just one year old, it will already cost much less than a new one. So second-hand vehicles are far cheaper than new ones. But an older, less expensive model may cost you dearly later on. It may need frequent repairs – and car repair work is quite expensive.
When you are thinking about buying a used car, always ask for the service book. This will show you how much maintenance and repair work has been done on the car in the workshop.

The “Pickerl”

The so-called “Pickerl” (vehicle inspection sticker) certifies that a car is safe for road traffic. To obtain the sticker, you have to have mandatory vehicle tests run on your car. New cars have to be tested for the first time three years after registration, the next test is due two years later, and after that, yearly inspections are required to keep your car’s “Pickerl”. The tests – and repairs, if necessary – have to be done at a certified garage. The poorer the condition of your car, the more expensive it will be to obtain the inspection sticker.

Insurance

Taking out liability insurance is a mandatory precondition you have to fulfil to get your car registered for road traffic and receive your licence plates. Additionally, you may opt for “comprehensive cover” insurance, which will cover any damage to your car. The more risks you cover by insurance, the higher your monthly insurance premium will be. Comprehensive cover insurance costs most as it covers most damage. Partial own damage cover means that you have to pay for some repairs yourself.

Fuel

Car fuel currently costs between € 1.70 and € 1.80 per litre. How much you need depends on your car. Big vehicles, especially SUVs, need a lot more fuel than others. So always keep in mind the fuel cost when considering the purchase of a car. Diesel costs slightly less than petrol, but the purchase cost of diesel-powered cars is higher.
Think ahead where you want to refuel – petrol stations on motorways tend to charge more per litre, and prices are often higher at the weekend.

Motorway toll

The use of motorways in Austria is subject to a road toll system – you pay the toll by buying a sticker which you attach to the windscreen of your car. You can buy stickers for ten days, two months or a year. In 2025, the price of a toll sticker for the whole year was about 103,80 euros.

Parking

This depends on where in Austria you live. In some districts in Vienna, for example, you have to pay for kerbside parking – another sticker to buy, at 120 euros per year. Most Austrian cities have short-stay parking zones subject to fees. A parking space in an indoor car park usually costs from 80 to 120 euros per month.
