Phishing: How to protect your accounts
When it comes to passwords, you can't be too careful. Criminals use phishing to try to get hold of your login details and shamelessly rip you off.

Help, someone is trying to get at my data!

Imagine you receive an email from a gaming platform (or from an online mail order company, a bank, etc.). The email tells you to click on a link immediately because you need to confirm your login details or there is something wrong with your account. In such a case, only one thing should happen: Your alarm bells should ring very loudly. Because it is quite possible that it is phishing. Phishing means something like “fishing for passwords”. The word is formed from “fishing” and the letters “Ph” for “password harvesting”.

Phishing can cost you dearly

In short: someone is trying to get hold of your access data. This can be very expensive if the criminals succeed. They can then use your account at your expense, for example to order from an online mail order company or transfer money from your bank account.

One important point:

A bank - as well as other reputable companies - will never ask you to enter a password by e-mail!

Victim? Certainly not me!

If you receive an email from a company asking you to do something, turn on your suspicion. Check the e-mail address: Does it give the URL of the company after the @ sign? Type the Internet address of the company in question directly into your browser (so don't click on the link in the e-mail!) and see if there is a problem with your account. Phishing attacks are not only carried out by email, but also in the background via so-called Trojans, a form of malware. It is therefore important that you always keep your software up to date and have an anti-virus program installed. Also be careful when downloading (games, MP3s, videos, etc.) from sources you don't know.

Raffle with a horse's foot

You receive a message via WhatsApp with a link promising you a voucher or something else: Delete the message! There are no vouchers via such links, but most likely a phishing attack!

And if it did happen?

Let's say you've become a victim of phishing despite everything. What do you do now? Very important: stay calm and try to limit the damage immediately. Mimikama explains how to do this step by step in a guide: Mimikama: Step by step: I was a victim of phishing. What to do in an emergency?
