3 good reasons for an apprenticeship

“Handwerk hat goldenen Boden”, is a saying in German, which translates to "craftmanship is always valuable". This old saying is still true, but there are now also many non-trade apprenticeships.

Solid training that stays with you

Solid training that stays with you. With an apprenticeship qualification, you have a solid education that no one can take away from you.

Really good job opportunities in many sectors

Really good job opportunities in many sectors. Many sectors are desperately looking for skilled workers. Those who learn the right skills have the best prospects of a crisis-proof career.

After the apprenticeship, there're many options

After the apprenticeship, there's still time. Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you can still continue learning in your profession and become a master craftsman, for example. Or you can go on to study.

The formula for the right apprenticeship

Personal interest + demand on the job market = ideal apprenticeship for you

Do what you love!

Learning for three years and then working for more than 40 years: It would be good if you really enjoy the job you're learning. Then you'll enjoy your work. The first step is to recognize yourself! What do you enjoy doing, where do your talents lie? Ask yourself - and ask those who know you really well! You can also try out the AMS Career Compass test.

Do what the world needs!

If an economic good is needed but is in short supply, its price rises. This was true for masks during the coronavirus crisis, just as it always is for the labor market. If there are too few well-trained specialists in an industry, companies voluntarily pay more to get the staff they need. It can therefore pay off to learn a profession that is not exactly on the hit list of the most popular apprenticeships.

Does money make you happy?

Of course, money alone does not make you happy. But too little money makes you unhappy. How high your income will be should therefore also play a role in your career choice. You can find out how much money you can earn in which apprenticeship, how much the apprenticeship pay is and how the AMS assesses the job opportunities in the AMS occupational lexicon. There you can look up all occupations, including those for which you need a degree. You earn more in academic professions than in apprenticeships. However, studying takes a long time and costs a lot. It can take years to make up the difference in income compared to an apprenticeship.

Practical tips for finding the ideal apprenticeship

Think for a moment: How many apprenticeships can you think of? More than ten? Bravo, you're already doing pretty well! But you probably haven't thought of all of the more than 200 apprenticeships. Perhaps there's a profession that suits you particularly well that you don't even know exists. The Ministry of Economic Affairs offers you a list of all apprenticeships from A-Z.

Just have a look at the apprenticeships that start with the first letter of your name! Even if this is only a small part of the overall list, it's a start ;).

All apprenticeships, but with a filter please

The bic.at“interest profile” asks you a few questions. The software then filters out the apprenticeships that might interest you. The“Try it out” website of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber is also highly recommended. All professions are presented there, you can ask questions and also find a training company. If you find it difficult to just look around on the internet, you can also go to a personal careers advice service. The following organizations, for example, offer this: BIZ - Vocational Information Center of the AMS Training and career consultants at the Economic Chambers and WIFI institutes

Taster apprenticeship: Blind date with the apprenticeship

Once you have found a profession that interests you, you can apply for a trial apprenticeship. A trial apprenticeship lasts a maximum of 15 days and gives you a very good insight into the profession. You should also ask for written feedback at the end. If it is good, you will have an advantage when applying for a job! If you no longer go to school, there is no longer a trial apprenticeship. Then you can do a “traineeship”.
