Capital market - is it for me?
When people say that they “make their money work”, they usually mean that they have invested it on the capital market in order to increase it. Sounds like effortless profit, but is it for everyone?

A market for bonds, shares and funds

In every market, supply and demand come together. Let's say you need eggs (demand). Then you go to the market where there is a farmer's wife selling fresh eggs (supply). The situation is very similar on the capital market. The only difference is that there is a demand for money that companies or countries need, for example for investments. Those who have money provide the matching supply to the demand. This can be institutions such as pension funds, but also private investors (you?). As an investor, you get something in return for your money, namely a security that securitizes the amount invested.

Part of the financial market

The capital market is part of the financial market. It mainly takes the form of trading on the stock exchange. In Austria, the only stock exchange is the Vienna Stock Exchange. The most important stock exchange in the world is the London Stock Exchange, followed by Tokyo and New York (“Wall Street”).

What do I buy on the capital market

Only you decide how you invest your money. There are various forms of investment available to you on the capital market.

The top 3 securities

With a share, you buy a small part of a company, specifically a public limited company. If the value of the company rises, the value of the share usually rises too. Conversely, you can also lose a lot or even everything with shares.

Part of the financial market

A fund comprises a mixture of different shares. A fund manager determines which shares are in the fund and to what extent. An annual fee is charged for his or her work - unless it is an ETF (exchange-traded fund, more below).

What do I buy on the capital market

A bond is a type of loan that is divided among many lenders. If you have a bond, you get your money back with interest. Bonds are therefore also called fixed-interest securities.

WTF are ETFs?

ETFs are funds that comprise shares in a specific share index. One share index, for example, is the ATX, Austria's most important share index, which comprises the 20 largest Austrian stock corporations. ETF is the abbreviation for Exchange Traded Fund. Because they are automatically compiled using an equity index, there is no need to pay a fund manager or managers to look after the fund.

My savings book

Your money is safe in a savings account - at least up to 100,000 euros. But it hardly earns you anything. The meagre interest is often “eaten up” by inflation. Shares are riskier (because you can also lose your money), but the investment can bring significantly higher profits in the long term.

Where do I shop?

If you want to buy securities, you don't have to go to the stock exchange. Banks or investment advisors act as dealers for securities. And you can buy almost anything online - including securities.

WTF are ETFs?

Inform yourself before you spend your money. And remember the rule of thumb that you should only invest money that you don't need as a nest egg or for foreseeable purchases. Because if you invest, you have to (be able to) think long-term.

What would our world be like without the capital market?

Imagine a company has a great idea, but unfortunately no money to implement it. If the capital market didn't exist, the idea would probably simply be forgotten. Companies need to invest when investment is necessary and not just when they have saved up enough.

I haven't had enough yet!
