Be rich after the summer break

Gain experience, make money
A summer job will not make you super-rich, but the income will help buy something extra that you fancy. And with nine weeks of summer vacation, there will still be enough time left for idling. A summer job brings in money, but it also gives you experiences that may benefit you in later life (in reality, not just on your CV!). But how to find a good summer job? In Austria, each regional capital has a youth information centre that can advise you on summer and part-time jobs.

How to find a summer job

If you don't start reading the classified ads section until you're lounging at the swimming pool, you’ll be very lucky to find something. Better start looking in autumn for the next summer.
Think about what you can do well, what you’d like to do – and which companies may find your skills useful. Your aim is not only to earn money, but also to have an interesting experience.
Browse through the classified ads section of a newspaper and search online portals for
job advertisements.
Just tell everyone you know what kind of job you're looking for and when you’d like to work – for example, in a bar or café in July, or in an office in August. Somebody may hear about a suitable job offer.
If you know where your interests lie, then simply search for firms that are active in this area and send them a job application. This is also called an “unsolicited”, “speculative” or “blind” application. Take care over your application documents so that they make a favourable impression on readers. You’ll find a how-to guide at Jugendservice OÖ, among others.

And if you have the job ...

Find out about your rights and obligations. The Chamber of Labor has put together 10 tips for holiday jobbers.
Make an employee tax assessment at the end of the year! This way you can get money back from the tax office. The tax book also provides information.
