When buying new household appliances, you should always opt for energy-efficient ones. Every appliance has an energy-efficiency rating printed on its label. “A+++” is the best rating, “A” is still good, and an appliance with a “B” rating will need some more electricity. A “C” rating means the appliance is a real “power guzzler”.
When an appliance or gadget is in standby mode, it will still consume electricity. It’s best to turn everything off completely if you are not using it right now. One convenient solution is to buy a power strip with a master switch to turn on and off the electricity supply.
Never start your washing machine or dishwasher when they are half empty.
Defrost your fridge regularly. Iced-up fridges and freezer compartments consume considerably more electricity.
It is better to take a shower than a bath, as it uses less water.
Do not leave windows tilted open in the heating season. Better open the windows fully to let in some fresh air at regular intervals. Open them for five minutes every three hours or so and shut them again immediately. That way, you get more fresh air and need less heating energy.
Do not overheat your apartment in winter. Put on a pullover instead. That way, you save a lot of energy, and that translates into money! Lowering the room temperature by 1°C lowers your energy consumption by 5%. The radiator should always be free standing. So don't put any furniture in front of it and make sure that the curtain doesn't cover the radiator.
In summer, close your windows and use blinds or curtains for shade. That way, you won’t need a fan. If the weather is very hot, switch off as many lamps and other electrical devices as you can. They also let off heat, adding to high room temperatures.
